Hale & Hearty presents Awareness Raising Campaign Award at Coeliac UK Conference

On Saturday, 26 June 2010, Christian Konig, Managing Director of Hale & Hearty Foods, presented the Coeliac UK award for Awareness Raising Campaign to Carolyn May. The runners up, Bruschetta Restaurant in Kingston Upon Thames, were also presented with a certificate.

Carolyn, from Putney in London, has been involved with Coeliac UK for a number of years. Sarah Sleet, chief executive of Coeliac UK said: "Whenever she has been asked to help raise awareness for Coeliac UK and coeliac disease, Carolyn has always happily agreed to help out in any situation."

Carolyn has been interviewed about coeliac by the national media, spoken at the Gastro 09 Conference and been involved in a training video for healthcare professionals across Europe.

She said: "It was totally unexpected and I am delighted to win this award .It is lovely to feel like I have done something useful to help."

Christian Konig said of the category which was sponsored by Hale & Hearty Foods: "We are delighted to have been involved with the Coeliac UK Awards and the awareness raising category is particularly important as so much is still unknown about the issues faced by people with coeliac disease.

"Carolyn's success is very deserved."

Bruschetta Restaurant was opened as the UK's first gluten-free restaurant inMay 2008 by Julia Zardetto. The restaurant has been very involved in raising awareness in its local region and Zardetto said, "We are delighted to be recognised for all our hard work...and championing good quality gluten-free food."

After presenting the runner up award to Bruschetta Restaurant, Konig said:"It is not just the effort of individuals that is needed to raise awareness of coeliac disease, restaurants' support is also essential."
